Ahh, spring break. The magical time when the hallways fall silent, the bells stop ringing, and the steady stream of students disappears. To most people, it sounds like a vacation for everyone in the school.
Here’s the reality from the main office: it’s not.
One of the challenges of working in a support role in a school is that when everyone else is on break… you’re not. Teachers return refreshed and cheerful—“Hope you enjoyed your break!”—and while the polite response is always a smile and a “It was nice, thank you,” the honest answer is a bit more complicated.
The truth? Spring break is when the office finally has space to breathe—and catch up.
Without the constant interruptions of ringing phones, early dismissals, and a steady flow of students, we can focus on the mountain of behind-the-scenes work that keeps the school running.
First up: organization. Winter break helped us reset from the first half of the year, but now it’s time to tackle everything that’s accumulated since January. Files are sorted, archived, and put in their proper place. Cumulative folders are reviewed, updated, and prepared for the next school year. It’s a full-on paper refresh.
Next comes data and records. Attendance audits, enrollment verifications, and report updates all get a careful second look. In the quiet, the little details—the ones that are easy to miss during busy school days—suddenly stand out.
Spring break is also prime time for planning ahead. Graduation lists, awards, testing schedules, and end-of-year logistics all begin taking shape. It’s a week full of forward-thinking and preparation.
And then there’s communication cleanup. Emails get answered. Voicemails returned. Forms processed. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching an inbox shrink—if only temporarily.
Of course, there are small perks. A quieter lunch. A hot cup of coffee that actually gets finished. A moment here and there to pause. Small victories, but meaningful ones.
So while students and teachers enjoy a well-deserved break, the main office keeps moving—just a little quieter, a little more focused, and incredibly productive.
Because when everyone comes back, everything starts up again.
And we’ll be ready.
