April 15th calendar day

April 15th — Da Da Da Dummmmmm

It’s a perfectly normal April morning in the school office.

The phones are ringing, the copier is making that suspicious noise again, and the coffee is doing its very best to keep everyone functional.

In walks a small child, backpack slightly unzipped, looking very concerned.

They approach the front desk and ask, in the most serious voice imaginable:

“Why are my mom and dad so grumpy today?”

Now, as the school secretary—and unofficial problem solver of everything—you pause. Because this isn’t about a missing lunchbox or a forgotten permission slip.

No, this… this is a Tax Day question.

So you lean in and say:

“Well, you know how sometimes you have to do homework even when you really, really don’t feel like it?”

The child nods.

“And you know how it takes a while, and you have to think really hard, and sometimes it just doesn’t make any sense?”

Another nod. We’re making progress.

“Well, today is kind of like that for grown-ups. It’s called Tax Day. It’s when they have to sit down, look at a lot of numbers, fill out forms, make sure everything is just right—and sometimes they have to pay money.”

The child considers this carefully.

“So… it’s like extra homework with a punishment?”

Exactly.

“Extra homework,” you confirm, “with no recess afterward.”

Now the eyes widen.

“See? They’re not grumpy at you—they’re just tired of doing something that’s a little confusing and a lot important.”

The child seems satisfied with this answer, gives a small “ohhh,” and wanders off—mystery solved.

Meanwhile, you take a sip of your coffee, glance at the stack of paperwork on your desk, and think…

Honestly? Same.

Because let’s be real—anyone filing taxes on April 15th is probably not on the refund side of things.

The excitement of claiming a new dependent has worn off, and parents everywhere are quietly realizing… the ROI on a newborn takes a while to kick in.
