Have you ever copied something, then copied something else, and suddenly realized you lost the first item you needed?
If you’re like most office staff, you’re constantly copying and pasting student IDs, email addresses, report numbers, phone numbers, and other pieces of information throughout the day. Fortunately, Windows has a built-in feature that can make this process much easier.
Meet Clipboard History
Most people know the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V to paste the last item they copied. But did you know that Windows can store multiple copied items for you?
Instead of pressing Ctrl + V, try using:
Windows Key + V
When you press Windows + V, a Clipboard History window appears showing several of the most recent items you’ve copied. From there, you can select exactly what you want to paste.
Why This Is Helpful
Imagine you’re working on student records and need to move several pieces of information between applications:
- Student ID numbers
- Email addresses
- Parent contact information
- Staff names
- Report data
Rather than switching back and forth to copy the same information repeatedly, Clipboard History lets you access previously copied items with just a few clicks.
First-Time Setup
If Clipboard History isn’t already enabled on your computer:
- Press Windows + V
- Click Turn On
- Start copying items as usual
Windows will begin saving your copied content automatically.
Bonus Tip: Pin Important Items
Have information you use frequently?
Clipboard History allows you to pin items so they remain available even after restarting your computer. This can be helpful for commonly used email signatures, phone numbers, standard responses, or frequently referenced codes.
Sometimes the best productivity tools are already built into the software we use every day. Clipboard History is one of those hidden gems that can save time and reduce frustration, especially during busy seasons when we’re juggling multiple tasks and systems.
Give Windows + V a try this week. You may find yourself wondering how you ever worked without it!
